"Denis Murphy's Slide", also known as "Pádraig O'Keeffe's Slide" or "The Weaver's Slide" is an
Irish slide in 12/8 time and D Major. The parts are played AABB'.
Denis Murphy (1910-1974) was born to musical family in an area called Sliabh Luachra.
It is a region at the intersection of three counties, Cork, Kerry, and Limerick and it is
well-known for its identifiable musical style and for producing some of the great southern
Irish players. Denis, born on the Kerry side is a fiddler known for a great pulsing
rhythm and clear ornaments. He was taught to play the fiddle by Pádraig O'Keeffe.
He lived in the U.S. for a while, from the 1930’s to around 1964
when he moved back to Ireland.
The banjo tab is from Ken Perlman's book New England and Irish Fiddle Tunes for Clawhammer
Banjo (1980). Ken's thinking is that there is no good reason for not playing any kind of tune
on the banjo. His Banjo Camp classes covering jigs (6/8), slip jigs (9/8) and slides (12/8)
are always fun.
It was printed in Cranitch's Irish Fiddle Book (1996).
It was recorded by The Chieftains on Chieftains 4 (1973) (as "O'Keefe's Slide").
